Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.
(Matthew 19:14)
When you walk into St. Nicholas Church on a Sunday, you will see children. We are a parish that is multi-generational so you can hear little voices everywhere in the church. If you ask parishioners what their favorite days are through the year, many will say Kermes, when the little ones sing folk songs from Slovakia... or Pascha, when the little ones are dressed in their finest with big smiles on their faces... or during an active round of musical chairs at the St. Nicholas Day luncheon. We encourage our children to be involved in our
activities - from dying Easter eggs, tying pussy willows, preparing food for Father's Day and making and decorating cookies for the Cookie Walk; we want their help. One day, the church will be theirs to run.
There are three organized groups for children, age 3 though High School:
Altar Boys
Becoming an Altar Boy means you will always be a part of a very special team. Please see the priest if you are interested in becoming an Altar Boy.
St. Nicholas Sunday School
The Church School program at St. Nicholas has always been a important part of parish life. Through the years St. Nicholas has been blessed with dedicated parishioners who were and continue to be willing to take up the mantel of teaching the youth in accordance to the Proverbs command “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Prov 22:6)
Children from the age of 3 through High School learn about the Traditions of the Orthodox Church, God, Our Savior and many of the Saints of the church. This is accomplished through a variety of Orthodox materials, written, audio and visual. To help supplement these materials arts and crafts along with question and answer sessions are used to reinforce lessons and allow children to feel free to ask questions about their faith, church and the world around them in a safe and non-judgmental environment. Classes are generally run during the months of September through May.
